Background of the Study

Sedentary lifestyles, characterized by prolonged periods of inactivity, have become increasingly common in many parts of the world and are strongly linked to the rising prevalence of obesity. In Benue State, shifts in occupational patterns, urbanization, and technological advancements have led to a reduction in physical activity, contributing to an increase in obesity rates. Sedentary behavior, including extended periods of sitting at work or during leisure time, is associated with decreased energy expenditure, metabolic imbalances, and weight gain (Ibrahim, 2023; Uche, 2024). In Benue State, the transition from traditional, physically demanding lifestyles to more sedentary urban living has had significant health implications. Obesity, in turn, is a major risk factor for a range of chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. Public health interventions that promote physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior are essential; however, the cultural and socioeconomic dynamics of Benue State may pose unique challenges to these initiatives.

Statement of the Problem

In Benue State, the growing prevalence of obesity has been linked to an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Many individuals, particularly those in urban areas, engage in minimal physical activity due to the nature of their work, technological convenience, and lifestyle changes. This sedentary behavior contributes to a positive energy balance, leading to excessive weight gain and associated health complications. Despite public health campaigns promoting physical activity, many residents continue to lead inactive lifestyles, exacerbating the obesity epidemic. The lack of accessible recreational facilities and safe environments for exercise further hinders efforts to increase physical activity. Without effective strategies to counteract sedentary behavior, the health burden associated with obesity will continue to escalate, placing additional strain on the healthcare system and reducing overall quality of life.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence of sedentary behavior and obesity in Benue State.

2. To examine the relationship between sedentary lifestyles and obesity.

3. To propose interventions aimed at reducing sedentary behavior and promoting physical activity.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and obesity among residents in Benue State?

2. How does sedentary behavior correlate with obesity rates in this region?

3. What interventions can effectively reduce sedentary lifestyles and lower obesity prevalence?

Research Hypotheses

1. Higher levels of sedentary behavior are significantly associated with increased obesity rates.

2. Limited access to recreational facilities correlates with a more sedentary lifestyle.

3. Community-based physical activity programs will significantly reduce obesity prevalence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on adult populations in urban and peri-urban areas of Benue State. Data will be collected through surveys, physical measurements, and interviews. Limitations include self-report bias regarding activity levels and confounding variables such as dietary habits.

Definitions of Terms

• Sedentary Lifestyle: A way of living that involves little or no physical activity.

• Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat accumulation, typically measured by BMI.

• Physical Activity: Bodily movement that enhances health.

• Recreational Facilities: Public spaces designed to encourage exercise and physical activity.
